- For Caregivers
Malaysia's population is ageing quickly, and by 2030 about 15% of Malaysians will be aged 60 and above. Demand for trained caregivers at home is growing every year. Yet many freelance caregivers still struggle with an unstable income: a few hours here, a cancelled job there, and long gaps between cases. The secret to a stable freelance career is recurring cases.
Why recurring cases matter
A recurring case is a regular schedule with the same family, for example Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm. Two or three recurring families can give you a predictable monthly income, less travelling between new homes and a much stronger relationship with the people you care for.
- Predictable income you can plan your household budget around
- Less unpaid time spent travelling to and learning new homes
- Better care, because you know your client's habits and health
1. Choose a focused working area
Families prefer caregivers who live nearby, because it means fewer late arrivals. Pick two or three neighbouring areas, for example Cheras, Kajang and Bangi, and focus your availability there. Shorter travel also means more working hours in your day.
2. Make your skills clear
List the specific things you are comfortable with: stroke care, dementia, diaper changes, transfers with a wheelchair, tube feeding (for nurses), cooking for diabetic diets, or languages you speak. Families searching for these skills will find you faster.
3. Set a fair and clear rate
In 2026, most freelance caregivers in the Klang Valley charge RM 20 – RM 30 per hour for personal care, and more for overnight, live-in or dementia care. Be clear about what is included and avoid adding surprise charges later. Families stay longer with caregivers whose pricing never changes without discussion.
Reliability is the most valuable skill a caregiver can have. Families will forgive a lot, but not a no-show.
4. Build your reputation with every case
Arrive on time, send a short update to the family after each visit, and keep a simple log of meals, medication reminders and anything unusual. These small habits lead to great reviews, and great reviews lead to recurring cases.
5. Keep upgrading your skills
Short courses in basic caregiving, first aid and CPR, dementia care and safe patient handling make you more valuable and allow you to take on higher-paying cases.
6. Know exactly what you will earn
If you work through any agency or platform, ask what percentage they keep. Some agencies keep 40% or more of what the family pays. On Love Care, the platform fee is a flat 10% from your rate, shown on every case offer. If your rate is RM 25 per hour and you work 20 hours a week, you earn RM 500 and receive RM 450, paid every Friday to your bank account.
7. Look after yourself
Caregiving is physically and emotionally demanding. Plan rest days, use proper lifting techniques and talk to someone when a case feels heavy. A rested caregiver gives better care, and stays in the profession longer.
