Freelance caregivers are often more affordable and flexible than traditional agencies, which is why many Malaysian families find helpers through Facebook groups, WhatsApp referrals or neighbours. But when you invite someone into your parent's home, safety must come first. Here is the checklist our care coordinators use.
1. Verify identity with MyKad
Ask to see the caregiver's MyKad (or passport and valid work permit for non-citizens) and make sure the name matches what they told you. Never hire someone who refuses to show identification.
2. Check at least two references
Call previous families or employers yourself. Ask how long the caregiver worked with them, whether they were punctual and why the arrangement ended.
3. Confirm training and certificates
Look for caregiving or elderly care course certificates, first aid or CPR training, and relevant experience such as stroke or dementia care. If you need clinical procedures, only use a registered nurse with a valid Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
4. Interview with your parent present
Notice how the caregiver speaks to your parent. Do they make eye contact, speak respectfully and listen? Language matters too. A caregiver who speaks your parent's dialect builds trust faster.
5. Start with a paid trial session
A 4-hour trial lets you see how the caregiver handles real tasks such as transfers, meals and bathing. Be present for at least part of it.
A good caregiver will welcome your questions. Someone who becomes defensive about references or a trial is a warning sign.
6. Write down the care plan
List daily tasks, medication times, allergies, emergency contacts and house rules. A written plan protects both your parent and the caregiver, and makes handovers easy if a replacement is needed.
7. Agree on pay clearly
Agree on the hourly or daily rate, how overtime and public holidays are handled, transport costs, and when payment is made. Keep records of every payment. Unclear pay is the number one reason freelance arrangements break down.
8. Have a backup plan
What happens if the caregiver falls sick or has a family emergency? With a single freelancer, you may be left without help at short notice. Keep a list of backup carers, or use a platform that can arrange a briefed replacement.
